He continued working in criminal law as he pursued his political dreams, after 15 years leaving criminal law and joining the McKay law firm in 1989 dealing mostly with bankruptcy and some personal injury until his retirement in 2010.

“The case did not hurt my political career as I had worried,” he said. “I served Polk and Floyd county in the State House winning two terms — the first in 1978 and the second in 1980.”

Fuller took an eight-year break and renewed his political career with a trip to the State Senate in 1988.

“Politics has always been in my blood,” Fuller chuckled. “My grandfathe­r’s father was Grover Cleveland Fuller and was named so because his father was so excited that the first Democrat had been elected after the Civil War. At the time Democrats had been 28 years out of the White House. My mom named me after a character on her favorite radio soap, thankfully not
