CALHOUN — Georgia will join South Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee for a regional week long speed enforcement initiative beginning today and running through Sunday. It’s called “Operation Southern Shield.”

The Calhoun Police Department, along with state and local law enforcement agencies, will be stepping up patrols to enforce posted speed limits on all highways, roads and streets. The crack down on speeders during the next week is to assure everyone “Arrives Alive.”

“We’re not trying to write tickets, we’re trying to get you to slow down. But guess what? If you don’t slow down, we will write you a ticket,” Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Harris Blackwood said.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, speeding is the cause of 30 percent of the traffic deaths in the United States each year.

ARAGON — The City of Aragon will be bringing on a new City Clerk to take over after the former clerk called it quits this week.

Sandy Norman, who had held the position since 2015, left her job after working out a twoweek notice for the city, according to Mayor Garry Baldwin.

He said that she did not provide a reason for leaving the city when she gave her resignation.

Baldwin said current court clerk Christie Langston is expected to take over the job if she is approved by the council for the promotion during their session on Thursday. Amy Liggoms is expected to become the new court clerk under those circumstances.

Norman has been the city clerk since 2015, when she took over the role after previously being named the assistant city clerk. She also previously held jobs with the Polk School District as well.

She had no comment on her departure from the city.
