Last 9 SPLOST proposals on tap for this week’s meeting
The citizens advisory committee hopes to have a package finalized by the first week in August.
The SPLOST Citizens Advisory Committee will hear the last nine project proposals Thursday — then the real work begins.
“After that, we’ll gather to narrow down the field,” Chairman David Newby told the panel. “You need to be thinking about what projects you would choose.”
More than $170 million worth of projects have been suggested for funding through an extension of the 1-cent special purpose, local option sales tax. The group has been tasked with choosing no more than $61 million — an estimate of what would be raised over five years, the maximum collection period allowed by state law.
Voters will weigh in on the proposed package in November. If approved, the
new SPLOST would start when the current one expires on March 31, 2019.
Newby said they hope to decide on the final list at their Aug. 3 meeting.
“We’re under the gun to get the information out to the community and start promoting it,” Newby said.
The vetting session starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Fire Administration Building, 409 E. 12th St., and is open to the public. The presentations are scheduled to last about 20 minutes each, including a question-and-answer period:
Recreation improvements and renovations at the North Broad Youth Center, from Terri Mayes;
Floyd County Judicial Center upgrades, from Juvenile Court Judge Greg Price;
Silver Creek Trail extension to Lindale, from Harry Brock and Mark Webb;
State Mutual Stadium improvements, from County Manager Jamie McCord and Rome Braves General Manager Mike Dunn;
“Waterways for Play,” from Dr. Frank Harbin;
Floyd County Historic Courthouse renovation, from Chief Appraiser Danny Womack and architect Ben Carter;
County paving, infrastructure and bridge improvements, from Public Works Director Michael Skeen;
Public Works facility, from Skeen and Facilities Manager Ryan Davis; and
Eliminating the stoplight at Veterans Memorial Highway and Redmond Road, from Nathan Roberts.
