Report: Drunk man takes woman’s Toyota, dog

A Lindale man remained in jail Saturday night after being accused fighting with a woman over the age of 65 and driving off in her car while under the influence of alcohol.

According to Floyd County Jail reports:

Larry Eugene Powell, 46, of 406 Strawberry Lane, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Friday. The woman had visible marks on her hands from the fight with Powell.

In addition to taking the woman’s 2008 Toyota Yaris without permission, he also took the woman’s German shepherd. Police found Powell driving the car at the intersecti­on of Dewberry Lane and Spring Village Road.

Powell had a strong odor of alcohol on him when officers approached him, and then discovered he was driving on a suspended license.

After his arrest, Powell was taken to Floyd Medical Center where he started using profanity and speaking loudly while in the hospital’s lobby.

Powell is charged with felony theft by taking a motor vehicle and exploitati­on and intimidati­on of disabled adults, elder persons and residents. He is additional­ly charged with misdemeano­r theft by taking, battery under the Family Violent Act, DUI, driving while license suspended and disorderly conduct.

Powell was being held for the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office without bond Saturday night on a failure to appear charge.
