An open house is set for Aug. 24 in Cartersville to unveil and take public comments on the proposed Rome-Cartersville Development Corridor.

The road is aimed at linking Floyd County with Interstate 75 and relieving congestion on Bartow County surface streets. Georgia Department of Transportation engineers have narrowed the potential routes to two alignments.

Both alignments would hit I-75 near the Anheuser Busch plant, with one access point close to Cass-White Road and the other a little farther to the south — near Tellus Science Museum.

The connector was originally envisioned as a limited-access road built for speed. However, engineers recently redesigned the road with atgrade intersections expected to significantly cut the estimated $75 million cost. A citizens advisory committee got details last week at a meeting in Cartersville.

“We need to go for it,” Floyd County Commission Chair Rhonda Wallace said.

Wallace didn’t attend the Thursday session but received Rhonda Wallace Stephen B. Morton /

a briefing on how the plan was received.

“Bartow is on board with it,” she said. “It’s something we all can agree on and can get done in a reasonable amount of time.”

Under the less expensive design, vehicles on the surface streets could make right turns onto the connector. Traffic would be kept flowing through the use of special J-hook ramps for drivers who want to cross the road or enter from a different direction. The Associated Press

Rising sea levels are killing trees along vast swaths of the North American coast by inundating them in salt water — like in this “ghost forest” near the Savannah River in Port Wentworth.

“At this point we need access,” Wallace said. “We don’t need to worry about it being up to interstate standards. The best thing for us is to get this done.”

The I-75 link for Rome — previously called the 411 Connector — has been in the works since the mid-1980s. Cartersville Ranch LLC, owned by the Rollins family, successfully challenged an approved route in 1989 and again in 2008. The Rollins family has indicated support for the revised routes.

Joseph Ciavarro, planning engineer for GDOT District 6, said the Aug. 24 gathering would be a drop-in informational meeting.

The session is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 516 Grassdale Road in Cartersville. Staffers will be available to take comments and answer questions.
