Mrs. Bertha Inez Kight, age 97, of Euharlee, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at a Centre, Alabama, healthcare facility.

Mrs. Kight was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on April 2, 1920, daughter of the late John Thomas Floyd and the late Lillie Ethel Ellenburg Floyd. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Warren Ed Kight, and by three sisters, Ollie Mae Dodd, Della Eugenia Robertson and Ola Faye Floyd. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Kight worked for over 50 years for Dillinger Inc.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Touchstone and her husband, Randall, Euharlee; a granddaugh­ter, Angela Szeremeta, Milton, Ga.; a grandson, Eric Touchstone, Marietta, Ga.; three great-grandsons; nieces and nephews.

Memorial graveside services will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Mr. Howard Touchstone will officiate.

Ronald L. “Ronnie” Burns, age 74, of Rome, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017, at a local hospital.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are incomplete and will be announced later.

Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, has charge of the arrangemen­ts.

Ms. Annie Prince Smith, “Granny,” age 95, of Lindale, passed away on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, in a Rockmart healthcare facility.

Ms. Smith was born in Forney, Alabama, on March 12, 1922, daughter of the late Andy Prince and the late Forney Jacobs Prince. She was also preceded in death by a son, James Smith. She was employed by Pet Bakery for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Marshall Smith and his wife, Brenda, Silver Creek, and Bobby Smith, Lindale; seven grandchild­ren, Jimmy Smith and his wife, Wanda, Joey Smith, Jamie Bailey and her husband, Rodney, Rhonda Smith and her husband, Andy, Lori Hann and her husband, Chris, Carey Cothran and her husband, Roger, and Crystal Purdy and her husband, Ronnie; 16 great-grandchild­ren; 8 great-great-grandchild­ren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Johnny Sisson officiatin­g. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 1 p.m. until the service time. At other hours, they will be at their respective residences.

Pallbearer­s are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday at 1:30 p.m. and include: Jimmy Smith, Joey Smith, Rodney Bailey, Sean Smith, Chris Hann and Andy Smith.

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Leonard Lavin, who built a small beauty supply firm into the billion-dollar Alberto-Culver company and owned a successful horse breeding, training and racing operation, has died. He was 97.

Lavin died at a family home from complicati­ons of pneumonia, spokesman Dan Stone said.

Lavin created AlbertoCul­ver Co. after borrowing money in 1955 to purchase a beauty supply company that sold Alberto VO5 hairdressi­ng product, according to a family obituary. Lavin expanded the company to include other wellknown hair care lines such as Nexxus and TRESemme. Alberto-Culver also owned Sally Beauty Supply, which became its own company in 2006.

Alberto-Culver was sold to Unilever PLC in 2011. At the time it had sales of $1.5 billion and sold products in more than 100 countries, the family obituary said.

Lavin also saw success in thoroughbr­ed racing with his 400-acre Glen Hill Farm in Florida, which has produced several stakes winners, including 1994 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner One Dreamer. MONDAY
