Winona Walker Garrison

Mrs. Winona Walker Garrison, age 87, of Rome, passed away Monday, August 7, 2017, at her residence.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are incomplete at this time but will be announced later.

Mr. Willard Carl Shiflett, age 92, of Lindale, passed away Tuesday morning, August 8, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Shiflett was born in Floyd County on June 22, 1925, son of the late Carl and Rosa Smith Shiflett. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Hughes Shiflett; by a sister, Betty Kelly; by three brothers, Herbert, Albert, and Melvin Shiflett; and by a grandson, Shane Shiflett. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart for injuries received during the war. Prior to his retirement, he was employed in the automotive department at Sears here in Rome for 35 years. He was a member of McFall Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Anne Jacobs, Lindale, and Peggy Daniel, and her husband, Steve, Smyrna; a son, Jimmy Shiflett, and his wife, Glenda, Cedartown; three sisters, Helen Shiflett, Frances Adams, and Judy Carter; a brother, Ray Shiflett; several grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the graveside in Rose Hill Cemetery in Rockmart. The Rev. Wayne Phipps will officiate with the BrownWrigh­t American Legion Post 12 Honor Guard extending military honors.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Thursday from 11 a.m. until noon. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

Mr. Jerry M. Sitten, age 93, of Rome, passed away Monday morning, August 7, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Sitten was born in Silver Creek, Ga. on April 9, 1924, son of the late Jerry Sylvester Sitten and the late Arlevie Sisson Sitten. He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Friel Sitten; by a daughter, Rosemary Herod; by two sons, Danny and Terry Sitten; by two sisters, Adell Tucker and Gladys White; by five brothers, J.P., Otis, Willard, Hubert, and Dennis Sitten; and by six half-sisters and two half-brothers. Mr. Sitten was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Medic during World War II. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Sitten was Jerry M. Sitten employed with Bekaert in Rome. He was a member of East Rome Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Janice Green, to whom he was married on April 4, 2009; two grandchild­ren, Terry Herod, Rome, and Brian Sitten, and his wife, Kim, Calhoun; four great grandchild­ren, Bryson and Kaylee Sitten, both of Calhoun, Emory Herod, Cave Spring, and Aiden Gentry, Lindale; three step-daughters, Tracey Garmon, and her husband, Chris, Silver Creek, Melanie Thornbury, and her husband, Mark, Rome, and Allison Gentry, Lindale; four step-grandchild­ren, three step-great grandchild­ren, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 3 p.m. at the graveside in Floyd Memory Gardens. The Rev. Mike Southerlan­d will officiate with the American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard extending military honors.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. At other times, they may be contacted at the residence.

Mr. Walter Elliott “Eddie” Giles Sr., age 73, of Rome, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

Mrs. Wilma Joyce Turner Hawkins, age 73, of Armuchee, passed away at her residence Monday, August 7, 2017.

Mrs. Hawkins was born in Rome, Ga. on April 18, 1944, the daughter of the late Wesley Troup Turner and Frances Ludie Camp. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Jerry Turner.

Mrs. Hawkins was a native to Floyd County. She was a critical care nurse at Redmond Regional, Floyd Medical, South Miami, and retired from Kindred Hospitals.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Hawkins, daughter, Christy Corbin, and two sons, Grant Hawkins and Shon Massey.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 10, 2017, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Daniels Funeral Home.
