The Rome City Commission is slated to get more information tonight on a One Table United event planned for Sept. 24.

Charles Love of One Community United, a local organization aimed at fostering communication between the races, has asked the city to approve use of public property downtown for the event.

“We want to create a visual — tables lined up with people just sitting down and having a meal together,” he said.

Love is a scheduled speaker at the board’s regular meeting, set to start at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St. Commissioners hold a premeeting caucus at 5 p.m. and both sessions are open to the public.

Steven McDowell, chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, has also asked to speak to the board during its meeting.

Commissioners have a relatively light agenda, with the main order of business a memorandum of understanding with Floyd County that will be presented by City Manager Sammy Rich.

The two governments plan to link their Zuercher Technologies systems to allow sharing among the public safety agencies — Rome and Floyd County police, the 911 center and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.

The board also is slated to accept on first reading several proposed rezonings and an ordinance amendment that would allow alcohol to be sold at events in City Auditorium. Public hearings and votes on the proposals are

set for the commission’s Aug. 28 meeting.

City commissioners also are scheduled to meet today with the Floyd County Commission and Cave Spring City Council. The three governments plan to sign on to a memorandum of understanding calling for a vote on the 2017 special purpose, local option sales tax package.

The SPLOST Citizens Advisory Committee finalized on Thursday a $63.8 million slate of projects. If it’s approved in November, collections would start after the current 1-cent SPLOST expires on March 31, 2019.

Floyd County commissioners are hosting the joint government meeting at 2 p.m. in the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave.
