Floyd County high schools receive food grant

- From Floyd County Schools

The Kellogg Co. funds will pay for carts and equipment to deliver grab-and-go breakfasts.

Floyd County Schools recently announced Armuchee High, Coosa High, Model High, Pepperell High and the FCS College and Career Academy received grants from the Food Research and Action Center funded by the Kellogg Company Fund.

The system’s Child Nutrition Department will use the grants to purchase carts and equipment to deliver grab-andgo breakfasts to help more students start the day with a nutritious school breakfast.

“We are thrilled to receive these grants and to have the support of Food Research and Action Center and the Kellogg Company Fund,” said Donna Carver, director of school nutrition. “We will put it to good use as we help more students in Floyd County start each day with a nutritious breakfast.”

Research shows that children who start the day with breakfast tend to do better in school. Breakfast can help kickstart metabolism, energy and focus for learning and can help set children up for the day ahead. Together, cereal plus a cup of milk is a leading source of 10 nutrients important to growing bodies, and may provide four of the nutrients Americans are missing most — calcium, potassium, vitamin D and fiber.

Unfortunately, millions of children don’t get that kick-start they need to help be alert to learn in the classroom. According to FRAC’s 2015-16 School Breakfast Scorecard, for every 100 low-income students who participated in school lunch, only 54 ate school breakfast — which means there are millions of low-income children who are not receiving a nutritious school breakfast.

Expanding school breakfast programs is part of Kellogg Company’s Breakfasts for Better Days global signature cause, launched in 2013. Through Breakfast for Better Days, Kellogg’s is seeking to expand breakfast programs around the globe, maximize product donations and advocate for the important role breakfast plays in the diet. To date, Kellogg’s has provided more than 1.4 billion servings of cereal and snacks (more than half of which are breakfast items) to children and families in need around the world through Breakfasts for Better Days.
