RPD: Shooting victim stable after surgery

-

A man who was injured in a gunfight with an intruder in his Burnett Ferry Road home early Monday morning was still hospitalized Tuesday, but was in stable condition after surgery, according to Rome police Capt. Roy Willingham.

Police were following up on leads Tuesday. Willingham said detective Corey Bowers had spoken with the homeowner at the hospital and confirmed that someone had broken in the home at 10 Burnett Ferry Road on Monday around 12:25 a.m. by kicking in a door. The man told Bowers that someone was in the kitchen and he was in the hallway when the gunfire broke out.

“He just knew someone was shooting at him and he shot back,” Willingham said of the homeowner.

Willingham said police still don’t know if it was just one intruder or more. The resident was wounded in his upper chest just below his shoulder blade, he said on Monday.

Police don’t know how many shots were fired in the exchange. Willingham said the guns involved were likely revolvers, because they could not find any shell casings at the scene.

From staff reports

Freeman is charged with felony theft by taking motor vehicle and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license, improper backing and hit and run.

She remained in jail Tuesday night on $5,700 bond.
