Teacher shoots self in classroom

Polly Jane Manning Hastings

Mrs. Polly Jane Manning Hastings, age 73, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Hastings was born July 27, 1944 in Floyd County, a daughter of the late O.D. Manning Sr. and Pauline Duggan Manning. She was a member of West Rome Christian Church, and was retired from Floyd County School System after over 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Joe Manning.

Survivors include her husband, Tony Hastings; son, Michael Hastings, Rome; grandchild­ren, Michael Wade Hastings, Tony Daniel Hastings II, Brandon Hastings; brother, O.D. (Joyce) Manning Jr., Rome; sister, Sandra Davidson, Rome; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from noon until the funeral hour on Friday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave., Rome, Ga. 30165.

Pallbearer­s include the following gentlemen: Michael Wade Hastings, Tony Daniel Hastings II, Brandon Hastings, Nick Kean, Casey Kean, and Greg Manning.

Stephen Lamar Smith

Mr. Stephen Lamar Smith, age 60, of Rome, passed away peacefully at a local healthcare facility on August 15, 2017 with his mother by his side. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Smith, and two sisters, Diane B. Smith and Teresa Annette Smith Parrish.

He was born in Floyd County, where he spent most of his life. Mr. Smith retired from Georgia Power after many years of service.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving mother, Ruth Pearson Smith; one brother, Scott Smith; a niece, Brittany C. Smith; two nephews, Brandon L. Parrish and Joshua L. Parrish.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Daniel’s Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour. The service will follow in the Thomas B. Griffin Chapel of Daniel’s at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Hayward Clark officiatin­g. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery.

— Authoritie­s say a teacher took a handgun into a high school and shot himself.

Douglas County sheriff’s Sgt. Jesse Hambrick says no students were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Hambrick tells AP that the teacher took the weapon into Lithia Springs High School about 7:15 a.m. Thursday and then suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a classroom.

Hambrick said authoritie­s don’t believe any students witnessed the shooting. The teacher, described as an 18-year employee of the school, was taken by helicopter to a hospital.
