Drone carrying phones crashes over prison

George Leslie Curry Jr., 91, of Rome, died Thursday, August 24, 2017, after a brief illness.

Mr. Curry was born May 20, 1926 in Floyd County, where he lived all his life except for two years serving in the U.S. Navy and two years when he moved to the Atlanta and Marietta areas while employed by Life of Georgia and Lockheed Aircraft.

He was educated in the Lindale and Cave Spring school systems and graduated from Cave Spring High School. He attended the Rome Center of the University of Georgia and earned a B.B.A. degree from the University of Georgia, Atlanta, in 1952.

Mr. Curry was a veteran of World War II, serving two years in the U.S. Navy. After training in the U.S., he was an S1c Radioman in communicat­ions aboard

OGLETHORPE — Authoritie­s say a drone holding several cellphones crashed as it flew over a Georgia prison.

News outlets report the drone was carrying three cellphones when it crashed over Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe on Thursday afternoon.

The Georgia Department of Correction­s said in a news release that a guard spotted the drone and drove to the crash site. Upon arrival, the guard picked up the drone and found the cellphones, which were packaged in black cloth and wrapped with electrical tape.

Joan Heath with the Georgia Department of Correction­s said that drones have become a tool used by individual­s who want to introduce contraband.

Authoritie­s do not know who was operating the drone, but Heath says it is being investigat­ed. excessivel­y fast around 3 a.m. Friday.

The GBI says the driver hit a second vehicle, and when officers approached, the man fought with officers. One officer used his stun gun on the man during the confrontat­ion and the man became unresponsi­ve. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Several officers received minor injuries in the confrontat­ion but didn’t need medical attention.
