A Georgia congressman and his wife are recovering after being injured in a car wreck that occurred in Tennessee Tuesday.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, and his wife, Desiree Loudermilk, were involved in a car wreck near Knoxville, Tennessee, early Tuesday morning and have been released from the hospital, according to spokeswoman Shawna Mercer.

“The Loudermilks immediately acknowledged God’s hand in protecting them from serious injury, and they would appreciate your thoughts and prayers as they recover,” she said in a statement.

After coming home to Georgia to assist with Hurricane Irma efforts, and the storm having cleared the area, the congressman and his wife were driving back to Washington, D.C.

The couple was traveling east on Interstate 40 when their vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle, causing their car to leave the road and flip multiple times, coming to rest on the passenger side, Mercer said.

Both Loudermilks were transported to the hospital where they were treated Rep. Barry and released; the injuries Loudermilk they sustained were not lifethreatening.

Doctors have instructed them to return to Georgia for follow-up treatment.

Loudermilk represents Georgia’s 11th Congressional District, which includes all of Bartow and Cherokee counties, as well as portions of Cobb and Fulton counties.
