J. Stanford Petroski

Mr. J. Stanford “Stan” Petroski, age 63, of Rome, passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

Stan was born in Atlanta, Ga. on January 20, 1954, son of the late Joseph Petroski and the late Rebecca Strickland Petroski. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gregory Alan Petroski. He was a life-long resident of Rome. Stan was a 1972 graduate of East Rome High School and attended Coosa Valley Technical School, where he studied Industrial Maintenanc­e/Electrical Technology. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1975 until 1983 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Lockheed-Martin in Marietta from 1984 until 2012 as an Airplane Mechanic. Stan enjoyed his hobbies of hunting, fishing, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a member of The Old School Cruisers in Rome and a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Rome.

Survivors include his sister, Pamela Petroski Ware, Rome; nieces and nephews including Zach Ware, Megan Ware, Ashley Ware Anglin, and her husband, Justin, Rachel Petroski, and Chris Petroski; an aunt, Billie Strickland Oldham; several cousins also survive.

There will be a private family memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to Heyman HospiceCar­e at Floyd, P.O. Box 163, Rome, Ga. 301620163. They were instrument­al in his care for the last year and were very much appreciate­d by the family.

Jessie Thorvald Smith

Mr. Jessie Thorvald “Butch” Smith, age 72, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017, in a local hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Floyd County on April 13, 1945, son of the late John Thomas Smith and the late Gladys Selena Roberts Smith. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Jackson and Bertie Lee Knowles, and by four brothers, Carl, Larry, Bennie, and Thomas Jefferson “Peanut” Smith. Prior to his becoming disabled, Mr. Smith was employed with Spears Mattress Co. here in Rome.

Survivors include his wife, the former Colleen Hudgins, to whom he was married on September 6, 1980; a daughter, Melissa Smith, Rome; two sons, Phillip Smith, and Johnny Willingham, and his wife, Denise, all of Rome; six grandchild­ren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at noon in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Greg Hunter officiatin­g. Interment will follow in Rome Jessie Thorvald Smith

Jerry Ronald Burrows

Mr. Jerry Ronald Burrows, better known by his friends as “Stamp Licker,” age 82, of Rome, passed away on, Monday, October 2, 2017, at his residence.

Jerry was born in Gadsden, Alabama on March 21, 1935, son of the late Henry and Erma Vice Burrows. He was of the Baptist faith, loved golfing, gardening and collecting any antiques he could find. Jerry was an avid Georgia Tech fan, retired from the United States Postal Service as a postal clerk after 35 years, and was a Navy Veteran. Mr. Burrows is preceded in death by a son, Scott Burrows.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Burrows; son, Rusty, and his wife, Vanessa Burrows; two daughters, Rhonda, and her husband, Lamont Cornett, and April, and her husband, Jarratt Bryan. Five grandchild­ren and three great-grandchild­ren also survive.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held at Salmon Funeral Home on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arthur Janov, a psychother­apist whose “primal therapy” had celebritie­s screaming to release their childhood traumas and spawned a best-selling book in the 1970s, has died. He was 93.
