The Floyd County Commission is expected to award an engineering contract Tuesday to design an extension of the road inside the North Floyd Industrial Park.

Prosperity Way currently ends in a cul-desac next to the Lowe’s Regional Distribution Center in the 100-acre tract off Ga. 53 at Ga. 140 in Shannon.

Heather Seckman, director of economic development at the Rome Floyd Chamber, said the extension would open up access to the back half of the property.

“It has to be engineered because it’s going to be crossing over some gas lines,” she said. “But everything else has been done. It’s 50 acres, zoned industrial, the environmental study is complete.”

The dead-end road is a sticking point when the tract is shown to prospective industries. The main question the scouts ask, she said, is how the gas lines will be bridged.

Seckman said she doesn’t have a timeline for construction, “but it needs to be done sooner rather than later.”

“Companies are always looking for a way to eliminate you, and not having access to the property is a good way to eliminate you,” she said.

Development authority and county officials have been discussing action on the road for more than a year.

County Manager Jamie McCord is expected to recommend the board accept a $17,000 proposal from Southern Engineering & Surveying.

Commissioners caucus at 2 p.m. and start their regular meeting at 4 p.m. in the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. Both sessions are open to the public.

Also on the agenda is the adoption of an ordinance amendment that would add cremation as an option for indigent burials.

Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor said cremation would save space in the pauper section of the cemetery and allow longer above-ground storage in case a family member is located to take possession of the remains.

Burial would still be an option if someone with standing raises a religious objection.
