Voter registration deadline is today
Today is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election, which includes two countywide ballot issues in addition to nonpartisan municipal posts.
Voters can check their status on the secretary of state’s Georgia My Voter website, mvp.sos.ga.gov, or by calling the Floyd County Elections Office, 706-5167.
Since any mail-in applications must be received by 5 p.m. today, officials recommend in-person registration at the elections office, 12 E. Fourth Ave., or the Georgia Department of Driver Services, 3390 Martha Berry Highway.
SPLOST: The governments of Floyd County, Rome and Cave Spring are proposing a $63.8 million package of projects for funding through an extension of the special purpose, local option sales tax. If approved, a 5-year collection would start when the current SPLOST expires on March 31, 2019.
ELOST: The school systems of Floyd County and Rome are proposing construction programs totaling $80 million to be funded through an extension of the education local option sales tax. The 5-year collection would start when the current ELOST expires on March 31, 2019.
Rome City Commission: Six candidates are vying for the three open city commission seats. Voters citywide will be able to pick three, with the three highest-polling candidates taking the seats.
On the ballot are incumbents Jamie Doss, Sue Hamler Lee and Wendy Davis and political newcomers Bill Kerestes, Randy Quick and Monica Sheppard.
Rome Board of Education: City voters will be able to choose seven school board members from a slate of 15 candidates.
On the ballot are incumbents Elaina Beeman, Will Byington, Faith Collins, Richard Dixon and Dale Swann. Bruce Jones and Cheryl Huffman aren’t seeking reelection.
The challengers are Melissa (Lisa) Davis, David Ehrler, Jill Fisher, Alvin Jackson Sr., Eric McDowell, Jim O’Hara, Ron Roach, JJ Walker Seifert, Valerie Smith-Howard and John Uldrick.
Cave Spring City Council: Two contested city council seats will be decided.
In the Post 3 race, incumbent Nellie McCain is facing a challenge from Marley Peals. In the Post 5 race, incumbent Mike Ragland is not seeking re-election. Nancy Fricks and Linde Wentz are vying for the seat.
Post 4 also is on the ballot, with incumbent Charles Jackson unopposed for the seat.
