Cedartown upsets Troup
Cedartown fans rushed the field as time expired to celebrate a big upset over Troup a down to the wire 21-18 win for the Bulldogs.
Head Coach Doyle Kelley said to his team after the game that Cedartown made a statement to the rest of the state in Friday night’s win: the 7-1 Bulldogs (3-1 5-4A) are back.
“Some people might not have thought we could do this,” Kelley said. “But we knew all week that we were ready ... This was Bulldog football.”
Defeating the 7-1 Troup Tigers (3-1 5-4A) was no easy task for Cedartown.
The Bulldogs’ defense held a Tiger offense averaging 40 points per game to just three scores, and held on a pair of 2-point conversions attempts.
Highly productive Troup quarterback Montez Crowe finished the night going 17 of 30 with 236 yards in the air, giving up two interceptions and throwing all three passes that resulted in touchdowns.
One of those turnovers caught by Cedartown quarterback and free safety Trevon Wofford killed a late fourth quarter Troup drive, which allowed the Bulldogs to kill time of the clock and give Troup only 14 seconds at the end of the game.
Wofford’s night put him on top of the playmakers for the Bulldogs on Friday night. He went 8 for 23 and 177 yards,
and ran in one of four Cedartown touchdowns on the night. Tony Mathis carried in the other two touchdowns on the night from 9 yards and 20 yards out.
Overall, the Bulldogs ended the night with 486 yards on offense. Cedartown’s win over Troup puts them in control of the second-place spot in 5-4A football behind Cartersville,
who continues undefeated this season. They travel next week on Friday to play the 4-4 Sandy Creek Patriots (3-1 5-4A).
“We’ve got to win the next two, and if we can do that we’ll have a home game for the playoffs,” Kelley said. “It’ll be the first time we’ve had a home playoff game since 2002.”
