CARTERSVILLE — The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an offduty reserve officer with the Kennesaw Police Department after a domestic violence shooting investigation.

According to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap:

On Oct. 15, 911 was called for response to a domestic violence incident which had just occurred and a man had been shot. Deputies made contact with John Vaughn who had been shot once with a firearm by his wife, Traci. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

After an investigation, police determined John Vaughn was the primary aggressor and issued warrants. He was arrested on Oct. 25 by the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and charged with aggravated assault and battery, both under the Family Violence Act.

Posts hint at teens’ deadly school plans

CANTON — After the arrests of two students who police say made serious threats against Etowah High School and their peers, the social media profiles of one suspect paints a harrowing story of violence, depression and romanticism revolving around the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, while the other suspect had a plan outlined for an attack at the local school.

Alfred Dupree, 17, of Acworth and Victoria McCurley, 17, of Woodstock were John Vaughn charged with three counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, four counts of terroristic threats and acts, one count of criminal attempt to commit arson and one count of possession and/or transportation of destructive device/explosive with intent to kill, injure or destroy any public building, police said.

Had the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County School of Police Department personnel not acted immediately on a tip Monday afternoon, the threats could have been realized, police said.

“There is an indication that this would have been carried through if we had not intervened,” Sheriff Frank Reynolds said Wednesday.

After searches through both their homes, police located Dupree’s personal journal outlining their plans against the school, as well as specific names of staff and students. Police would not share the details of the journal in a press conference.

“A homemade incendiary device, which was described as a flammable substance and an undetermined powder substance,” was found in McCurley’s home, police said.

Public profiles examined by the Tribune and attributed to “Gabi” McCurley on several social media sites and featuring photographs of a woman matching the arrest photo of Victoria McCurley indicate thought-out threats.
