Christmas season set to kick off today at bazaar

More than 60 years ago Margaret Gaylor and a few other women started the Homemakers Council. Today she’s still an active member of the club as it prepares to host its annual Christmas Bazaar.
The 60th annual Christmas in November Homemakers Bazaar kicks off today. The event will be held at the Civic Center, 400 Civic Center Drive, on Jackson Hill, beginning this morning at 9 a.m. and will end this evening at 5 p.m. The event will continue tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The bazaar this year will be selling only homemade and home baked items featuring bird houses, wooden snowmen, wreaths, jams and much more. Buyers can also expect soups, sandwiches and homemade desserts sponsored by the Four in One Homemakers Club. Free parking and free admission as well as door prizes will be offered both days.
“The council was initiated as an outlet for women to meet and get to know new people,” said Deanne Hoffman, current president of the Floyd County Homemakers Council.
The Homemakers Council currently has seven individual clubs and has had up to 30 at a time throughout their active years. The council works to reach out to all women within the community as well as to serve the county of Floyd with projects and fundraisers.
The Christmas in November Homemakers Bazaar is the organization’s main fundraiser each year. The money made will go towards multiple causes including Ross Rogers / RN-T a college scholarship, a sponsorship for one child to spend their summer at the Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and to help support the local Boys & Girls Club. A percentage will also go back to the individual Homemakers Clubs, where they will participate in community service projects.
