Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord is expected to announce his selection for chief of police at the county commission meeting Tuesday.

Police Chief Bill Shiflett is retiring after 14 years at the helm of the Floyd County Police Department, and 43 years on the force. McCord has been interviewing candidates for more than a month.

Commissioners are scheduled to caucus at 2 p.m. and start their regular session at 4 p.m. in the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. Both sessions are public.

The board plans to issue a proclamation in honor of Shiflett, as well as recognizing Charlie Culberson and David Newby. Employees with 15 or more years of service are scheduled to receive their service pins.

Also on the agenda is a public hearing on the proposed 2018 budget, which the board is slated to adopt as one of its final actions Tuesday.

No millage rate increase is proposed. Finance Director Susie Gass has said she is projecting a 2.5-percent increase in the overall value of property in the county next year.

The budget includes merit raises of up to 2 percent for all employees and the first phase of a parity adjustment for about 110 corrections officers on the county payroll. New funding also is planned for the addition of six corrections officers, a transportation planner, the county’s first morgue and a spay and

neuter program at PAWS, the year-old public animal welfare services facility at 99 North Ave.

Commissioners also are scheduled to adopt a SPLOST reimbursement resolution.

It was unclear Sunday what the resolution would cover. However, County Attorney Wade Hoyt has said a resolution would allow the county to recapture the funds if it did projects in the special purpose, local option sales tax package before the money is collected. The 2013 SPLOST collection runs through March 31, 2019, and the 2017 SPLOST collection starts the next day.

The board also is expected to accept a $15,000 grant from the state’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for a counselor position in the county’s fledgling mental health court.
