Florence Cole Pearson

Mrs. Florence Cole Pearson, age 81, of Silver Creek, Ga., passed away on Wednesday evening, December 13, 2017, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Pearson was born in Atlanta, Ga., on September 16, 1936, daughter of the late Frank William Cole Sr. and Cora Mae Timbs Cole. She was a 1954 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Atlanta and moved to Rome in 1957. Mrs. Pearson was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church. She loved shopping and spending time with her grandchild­ren. Mrs. Pearson was married on June 15, 1957 to Alfred Carroll Pearson; he preceded her in death on January 10, 2002. Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Peggy Sue Pearson Wright; a brother, Frank Cline Cole; and a sister, Margaret Cole Simmons.

Mrs. Pearson is survived by five sons and daughtersi­n-law, Bobby and Carla Pearson, of Silver Creek; Terry Pearson, of Silver Creek; Dr. Jerry and Janet Pearson, of Cannelton, Ind.; Ricky and Kelley Pearson, of Dayton, Ohio; and Frank Pearson, of Silver Creek. Fourteen grandchild­ren and a host of great-grandchild­ren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Pearson’s family will receive friends on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Salmon Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A private interment will take place later.

Mr. Billy Wayne Wright, 75 yrs. old, passed away on December 7, 2017 at local nursing home.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. CST at Cherokee Memory Gardens, 1250 Piedmont Hwy., Centre, Ala.

Mrs. Sherry Barton Gatlin, 73, of Rome, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017, at a local hospital.

Born on April 7, 1944, she was the daughter of the late W.M. and Vivian Barton. She was a member of North Broad Baptist Church and was a teacher and coach at Model High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Jerry Gatlin; and a brother, Dickie Barton.

Survivors include her daughter, Meaghan Gatlin Sopata; her grandson, Barton Sopata; her sister, Sheila Barton; her niece, Stacey Atsides; and great niece and great nephew, Athena and Santino Atsides.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held Sunday, December 17, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. in the North Broad Baptist Church with the Reverend Micah Pritchett and the Reverend Benjie Mathis officiatin­g. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour in the North Broad Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectful­ly requests memorial contributi­ons be made to the Model/Johnson Schools Foundation or North Broad Baptist Church (Special Projects and Decorating Fund).

Ronnie “Paw Paw” Waid, age 74, of Rome, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at a local medical center.

Mr. Ronnie Waid was born on August 16, 1943, the son of the late Bill Waid and Gladys Gresham Waid. He was employed by Southern Bell for over 30 years and was a member of Shannon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda Elliott Waid; his children, Jeff (Marisa) Waid, Rhonda (Bubba) Ely, Tina (Leon) Hale, Ronnie (Sally) Lewis; grandchild­ren, Austin Kerr, Houston Kerr, Bryna Ely, Brooke Garrett, Brett Ely, Gracie Hale, Tyler Waid, Brandon Wallace, Lexie Hagood, Lily Hagood, Ella Lewis; five great-grandchild­ren; siblings, Billy and Barbara Ford, Gail and Lou Essick, Tammy and Joe Hughes, Diane Montgomery and Euklin, Bobby Cochran. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Simon Dickie, who coxed New Zealand rowing crews to Olympic victories at Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972, has died. He was 66.

Rowing New Zealand announced his death, but gave no details.
