1 in FMC after wreck

-

The driver of a Jeep Cherokee that collided with a Ford truck on U.S. 27 South, just past the railway overpass, Tuesday night was taken to Floyd Medical Center after being extricated from his vehicle.

According to Rome police Lt. Paul Green:

Rome-Floyd County firefighters had to use a winch on the side of a squad truck specialized for rescues to pull the driver’s side away from the guard rail it was up against. They then sawed off the driver’s side door to pull the man from the Jeep. An FMC ambulance took the man, who was conscious and alert, to the hospital around 6:26 p.m., over 20 minutes after the wreck was reported.

Witnesses told police the Jeep was traveling at a high rate of speed when the wreck happened. Both vehicles had just gotten out of a turn before the railway overpass, when the Jeep went off the left lane and onto the shoulder. The driver of the Jeep overcorrected, sending the vehicle into the rear of the truck.

The truck flipped onto its side but was turned back upright after slamming into a concrete barrier on the overpass. The Jeep also hit the concrete barrier and slid up against it. The truck traveled over 50 feet farther than the Jeep.

The name of the drivers weren’t available Tuesday night.

Green said he expected the driver of the Jeep to be issued a citation.

Southbound traffic was stopped before the wreck and rerouted on the Darlington Drive exit. By close to 7 p.m., traffic was almost back up all the way to the interchange.
