Area wrestling teams keep up on the mats as duals tournaments draw near.

The break from classes doesn’t transfer to a break from competition for area high school wrestling teams, especially with the fast-paced season bringing state tournaments closer and closer.

Several teams were back on the mat Thursday, while even more will be participating in tournaments today and Saturday to get in as much work as possible before area duals next weekend.

The annual Rockmart Jacket Invitational was held Thursday, with Armuchee and Model competing along with fellow Area 3-AA member Rockmart and Class 4A school Cedartown. Results were not available at press time.

Pepperell’s wrestling team was in Canton on Thursday participating in the Steady Eddy Classic at Creekview High School.

The Dragons finished fourth out of 12 schools in the duals tournament.

“I was proud of them,” Pepperell coach Joe Knight said. “We took our kids down there to get some good competition against some bigger schools, and we had some kids step up and do well.”

Pepperell, also in Area 3-AA, took first in its group in pool play. The Dragons defeated Class 6A school Harrison on criteria after the two teams wrestled to a 36-36 tie. Pepperell then beat Pickens, a 4A school.

Advancing to the bracket, the Dragons were beaten by host Creekview and Mountain View, who both went on to finish above Pepperell, which was the only Class AA team in the tournament.

Darlington and Rome will return from the Christmas break today as Darlington travels to Holy Innocents’ for the Prep Slam X tournament and Rome goes to Lambert High School for the Hook’em Holiday Tournament.

The Dragons will be back in action Saturday as they compete in the Calhoun Duals.
