62-year-old Dalton man faces federal bank robbery charges

A 62-year-old Dalton man is expected to be arraigned this week on federal charges accusing him of robbing a Wells Fargo bank in Dalton on Oct. 19.

James Gilbert Crick is scheduled for his first appearance hearing and arraignment in U.S. District Court in Rome on Thursday. He reportedly entered the bank around 10 a.m. that morning and police say he waived the gun around, pointing it at patrons and bank employees.

The bank’s alarm was tripped and Crick fled.

“After receiving some cash, he fled out of the door and left the area,” Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Swiney told the Dalton Daily Citizen.

He was captured just down the road a short time later, Swiney said. Police found the handgun in his car.

Crick was indicted on federal charges of armed bank robbery, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and felon in possession of a firearm on Dec. 12.

He was previously convicted in Kentucky in the 1970s of murder, armed robbery and vehicle theft, according to the indictment.

Crick also faces state charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office website. His next scheduled court date in Whitfield County on his state charges is scheduled for Feb. 9.
