Floyd County Board of Education members hope to replace three elementary school administrators by their February meeting, according to Superintendent John Jackson. The board re-elected Chip Hood as chairman and Tony Daniel as vice-chairman during a quick meeting Tuesday morning. Seated around the board table, are Melinda Strickland (clockwise from left), Tony Daniel, Chip Hood, Jackson, attorney King Askew, Jay Shell and Melinda Jeffers.

Floyd County School Superintendent John Jackson and members of his administrative leadership team will be meeting with Local School Governance Teams over the next two weeks to help in the process of choosing new principals at Cave Spring Elementary, Glenwood Primary and Johnson Elementary Schools.

Jill Shepherd, principal at Glenwood Primary formally announced her plans to retire at the end of March right before the Christmas break. She had made her intentions regarding retirement well known as early as last fall.

Trina Self retired from the principal’s post at Cave Spring Elementary at the end of November. Shelly Bell, retired Pepperell Elementary Principal, Doug Walker / RN-T has taken that post in the interim.

Tanya Welchel has been the interim principal at Johnson Elementary for the past school term after LaDonna Turrentine moved over to Coosa High. Jackson said he would be making a recommendation for a permanent replacement at Johnson next month.

“I hope to make recommendations for all three positions at the February board meeting,” Jackson said.

Cave Spring Elementary School will soon be the recipient of a 10-foot by 10-foot Lego Wall. Floyd County Board of Education member Melinda Jeffers won the wall at a recent meeting of school board officials in Atlanta.

“I think it will make a really great sensory activity,” Jeffers told fellow board members Tuesday morning,

Chip Hood was re-elected to serve another year as chairman of the Floyd County Board of Education and Tony Daniel has been chosen to serve another year as vice-chairman.
