Destiny Independen­ce takes trip to High Museum

to teach the entire group how to recognize some of the characteri­stics and artists of four periods in art history: Neo-classism, Romanticis­m, Impression­ism, and Realism. This art prep class was followed by a pizza dinner for all, compliment­s of the Little Caesar’s on Hicks Drive and Sam’s Club.

On Jan. 21, the group was given a private tour of the four “isms” at the museum, followed by one hour of a hands-on, art access activity in which students created art using three different mediums. The tour and activity were part of the Title I program at the High Museum of Art.

The 15 adults attending the trip gave their time to act as “Mentors for a Day,” with a one to two adult/youth ratio in order to ensure the safety and participat­ion of the entire group.

Destiny Independen­ce is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to helping hundreds of children in East and South Rome make it all the way through college or job training and into their first self-supporting adult employment. Significan­t parts of the program are a partnershi­p with Sylvan Learning Center to bring as many of the students as possible up to grade level in reading and math, private and group mentoring, spiritual nurture, and two cultural field trips per year outside of Rome to broaden their horizons.
