Dewey Shiflett

Mr. Dewey Shiflett, age 86, of Lindale, passed away Tuesday morning, January 23, 2018, in a local hospital.

Mr. Shiflett was born in Polk County, Georgia on March 19, 1931, son of the late Emory P. Shiflett and the late Sallie Mae Davis Shiflett. He was also preceded in death by six siblings, Whitson Shiflett, Faye Cox, Addie Ruth Cain, Sara Griggs, Mae Hindmon, and his twin sister, Jewell Shiflett. Mr. Shiflett was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #136 and had attended Wesley Chapel Methodist Church and Park Avenue Baptist Church. Prior to retirement, Mr. Shiflett worked for a number of years for Bekaert Steel Wire Corporatio­n.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Betty Lou Putnam Shiflett, to whom he was married on September 14, 1951; four children, Teresa Dale Shiflett, Lindale, Van Shiflett and his wife, Frances, Taylorsvil­le, Chris Shiflett and his wife, Cathy, Cumming, and Beth Anderson and her husband, Bobby, Lindale; six grandchild­ren, Duane Shiflett, Tabitha Shiflett, Allison Gentry and her husband, Preston, Cole Shiflett, Will Anderson, and Leah Anderson; three great-grandchild­ren, Audrey Shiflett, Jack Shiflett, and Maggie Mae Gentry; six siblings, Charles Shiflett and his wife, Peggy, Mamie Lou Marks, Mozelle Gayton, Albert Shiflett and his wife, JoAnn, Kenneth Shiflett and his wife, Betty, and Wallace Shiflett and his wife, JoAnn; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Conway officiatin­g and Teresa Shiflett and Will Anderson delivering eulogies. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard presenting military honors.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. Pallbearer­s are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and include: Active: Duane Shiflett, Cole Shiflett, Will Anderson, Preston Gentry, Ben Shiflett, and James Cox. Honorary: Members & Ladies Auxiliary Members of the American Legion Post #136.

Mary Ann Hamilton Bray

Mrs. Mary Ann Hamilton Bray, age 85, of Rome, Ga., passed away on Saturday morning, January 20, 2018.

Mary Ann was born in Shannon, Ga. on July 20, 1932, daughter of the late Melvin Elbert Hamilton and Lora Simmons Hamilton, and had lived all her life in Rome and Floyd County. She was a housewife and a faithful member of the North Rome Church of God. In her earlier years, Mary Ann had worked for Klopman Mills for a number of years and retired from there in 1962. She loved music and playing the organ. In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Bray; children, Cynthia Reeves and Timothy Reeves. Also preceding her in death was the father of her children, Edward Lee Reeves; four brothers, Elbert Hamilton, Bill Hamilton, Bernard “Bumble” Hamilton, and William Hamilton; a brother-in-law, Cecil Bryan; a nephew, Curt Bryan; sonin-law, Gene Berry.

Mary Ann is survived by a daughter, Teresa Berry; grandson, Christophe­r Douglas Logan; two greatgrand­children, Alyssa Logan and Tyler Logan; great-great-granddaugh­ter, Kensleigh Logan; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Laura Bryan, and Jeanie and Sam Mize, two brothers and a sister-in-law, Mody and Annelle Hamilton and Tommy Hamilton; sisters-in-law, Annie Hamilton and Imogene Hamilton. Special nieces, Len Tyler and Elizabeth Johnson; great-niece, Charity Bryan; great-nephew, Cole Bryan, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive.

A Celebratio­n of life for Mary Ann will be held on Friday evening, January 26, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. in the Salmon Funeral Home with the Rev. Bert Brooks officiatin­g.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening at Salmon Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Willie Ree Howell, 80, of Cave Spring, died Wednesday afternoon in a Rome hospital following an extended illness.

Mittie Lou Knight, age 84, of Rome, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at Perry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Weiss Lake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include sons, Donald Knight of Birdsboro, Pa., Wayne Knight of Rome, Ga., Robert Knight of Cedar Bluff; daughters, Janet Murdock of Rome, Ga., Diane Benefield of Newnan, Ga.; sister, Glenda Battles of Gaylesvill­e; 13 grandchild­ren; 22 greatgrand­children; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Knight was a native of Cherokee County, the daughter of the late Mid Mobbs and Ida Bell Roberts, was a retired waitress and was of the Baptist faith.

Donald L. Wiggins, age 88, of Rome, passed away on Jan. 19, 2018 at a local facility.

Mr. Wiggins was born April 8, 1929 in East Fultonham, Ohio, the son of the late Leland Wiggins and Agnes Fauley Wiggins. He was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Amell Wiggins, and a brother, Robert Wiggins.

Mr. Wiggins worked at General Electric Company in Rome as a photograph­er. He served our nation in both the United States Army and Air Force during the Korean War.

Survivors include a son, Robin Wiggins, and his wife Joan; three daughters, LuAnn Wiggins Sartin, and her husband Allen, of Rome, Deborah Wiggins of Rome, Nona Wiggins Conner and her husband, Charlie; his six grandchild­ren, Gina Walter (Jason), Mandy Brackett (Danny), Derick Sartin (Kimberely), Cody Wiggins (Brandy), Chip Conner (Kathrina), and Dennis Conner; and his seven great-grandchild­ren, Justin Walters, Katlyn Walters, Jacob Walters, Austin Angle, Emma Sartin, Cam Wiggins, Cort Conner, and Cadence Conner.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Mausoleum at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion to have charge of military rites.

Gloria Johnson Wilkes

Mrs. Gloria “Jean” Johnson Wilkes, age 77, of Acworth, Georgia, and formerly of Rome, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

The epitome of selflessne­ss and generosity, Jean devoted herself to the job of being a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a doting grandmothe­r. She loved her family fiercely, and nothing brought her more pride or gave her more joy. She will always be remembered for her strength, her independen­ce, her humor, her beauty, her grace, and her faith. While her family is heartbroke­n by their tremendous loss, they rejoice that she is now with her Heavenly Father and her beloved husband, Lawrence, who preceded her in death.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Clarence Johnson, and her brother, Doug Johnson.

Mrs. Wilkes is survived by her children: Lawren and Larry Dentmon, of Cedartown, Lyn and Jody Collier of Acworth, Ga., Greg and Dodie Wilkes of Lake Wylie, S.C., Anna and Mark Smith of Charlotte N.C.; nine grandchild­ren; six greatgrand­children; sister, Peggy and husband Wayne Beck, of Cedartown. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service for Mrs. Gloria “Jean” Wilkes will be held Thursday, January 25, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Smith & Miller Funeral with the Rev. Wayne Benefield officiatin­g.

The family will be receiving friends at the Smith & Miller Funeral Home prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Northview Cemetery.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearer­s: Phil Wilkes, Jake Collier, Mark Smith, Garrett Cyr, Zack Dentmon, and Josh Dentmon.

Mrs. Ramonda Ann Washington, of Aragon, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018.

Services for Mrs. Ramonda Washington will be held Friday, January 26, 2018, 1:00 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church, 49 Dean Road, Silver Creek, Georgia 30173. The body will lie in state from noon until the hour of service. Interment will follow the services at the Flint Hill Cemetery, Aragon, Georgia.
