The Georgia Highlands College men’s and women’s basketball teams will be playing to raise cancer awareness with benefit games on Wednesday at Georgia Highlands College, 3175 Cedartown Highway, at 5:30 p.m. The benefit is in honor of Holly Ford, wife of Dean of Natural Sciences and Physical Education Greg Ford, who is currently battling cancer. Benefit shirts can be ordered at all Georgia Highlands campus business offices. Proceeds from shirt and ticket sales will go to cancer research.

THURSDAY

Shorter University Student Government Associatio­n will host a public forum titled “Beyond Color Blind” Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Brooks Chapel at Shorter University. Community leaders, faculty and students will discuss race, faith and disenfranc­hisement and how the school and community can come closer together despite our difference­s. There will be a panel discussion with a time for questions at the end. Admission is free.

Floyd County Schools will accept applicatio­ns for the Georgia Lottery PreKinderg­arten Program for the upcoming 2018-19 school year Tuesday through Friday during regular school hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applicatio­ns may be picked up and returned to the following: Alto Park Elementary, Cave Spring Elementary, Garden Lakes Elementary, Glenwood Primary, Johnson Elementary, McHenry Primary, Model Elementary and Pepperell Primary. The guidelines to apply are: Proof of residence, one applicatio­n per child, apply in the attendance area of the school in which you reside, and child must turn 4 years old before Sept. 1. The Berry College Moon Gallery is presenting “Journals and Reading Lists” by Travis Head through Thursday. The Moon Gallery is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Rome First Baptist Church, 100 E. Fourth Ave., is hosting “Familiar Faces and Places,” an exhibition of works by Rena M. Storey, in its art gallery until Feb. 28. Enter from the East First Street parking lot next to the chapel, and take the elevator to the third floor.

Rome’s Own Gospel Choir and Northwest Georgia Winds will perform a concert titled “Lift Every Voice” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Rome City Auditorium. Admission is free. The concert will celebrate unity and togetherne­ss for Black History Month. Blood Assurance is requesting blood donations at local donor centers or bloodmobil­e drives. There is less than a one-day supply of O negative blood and the community is asked to donate to help guarantee blood is available for hospital patients. Donors must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating. Floyd County Superior Court Clerk Barbara H. Penson requests that veterans of all military branches of service be sure their DD-214 discharge is recorded at the courthouse. Veterans may record their DD-214 in Floyd County in addition to their hometown, county or state. Bring a DD-214 to the Clerk of Superior Court’s Office, 3 Government Plaza, Suite 101, to have it recorded for Floyd County. This is a free service for all veterans.

One Community United will host the Rev. Eric S.C. Manning, pastor of Emanuel A.M.E. Church (Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina, as the keynote speaker at the third annual Hearts United Gathering on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. The theme of Manning’s address will be “Racial Healing and Reconcilia­tion.”

The Heart of the Community Foundation will host Loving Hearts Move, a community walk-cycle-paddle event, Feb. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Green. The event is free, but donations will be accepted to support heart-related projects in the local community. The walk route is 1.5 miles, the bike route is 2 miles and the paddle is 3 miles. The Rome Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will offer Family-to-Family, a free 12-week education course for adults who have a friend or family member with a mental illness.
