Area ‘mathletes’ come in 2nd

Rome Middle students place in the MATHCOUNTS regional finals.

A team of “mathletes” from Rome Middle School claimed second place in the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS competitio­n, which was sponsored by the Northwest Chapter of the Georgia Society of Profession­al Engineers.

Heritage Middle School won first place, and third place went to Dalton Middle School.

The math competitio­n was held on Friday at Georgia Power’s operating headquarte­rs in Floyd County.

Other schools represente­d were Dade Middle School, LaFayette Middle School and St. Mary’s Catholic School.

The regional competitio­n is part of the MATHCOUNTS national mathematic­s coaching and competitio­n program, which is nationally sponsored by the National Society of Profession­al Engineers.

The competitio­n is designed to increase enthusiasm for and advance achievemen­t in middle school mathematic­s throughout the United States.
