Clients at two local institutions that offer a helping hand up were treated to makeovers and lunch Monday by cosmetology students at Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

It’s the department’s third annual spa day for women at Highland Rivers Behavioral Health and the Floyd Training and Service Center — in appreciation of the help they give to others.

“They’re all volunteers for Angel Express,” said Janet Baltzer, founder of the nonprofit organization that’s heading into its 25th year.

“All these ladies have helped me ... and we wanted to give them a Princess-for-a-Day feeling,” Baltzer added.

Angel Express raises funds throughout the year for local events, including a prom for special needs children complete with decorations, fancy dress and corsages.

It’s also a perennial contributor to Christmas programs, restoring used toys, clothing and household items for giveaways by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Northwest Georgia Housing Authority and other agencies.

“These ladies come every week to work. They don’t get a lot of treats, and this is a way to say thank you,” Baltzer said.

Cosmetology instructor Susan Stephens said 29 students pitched in to

pamper the 18 volunteers with services ranging from hair treatments, cuts and stylings to manicures, make-up and pedicures.

After several hours in the chairs, they all broke for a buffet lunch provided by Westminster Presbyterian Church and some of the students. Then it was time for photos, with and without their sparkly princess glasses and wands.

“Say ‘Girl Power!’” Baltzer urged before she snapped a group picture.

The Floyd training center teaches developmentally disabled adults skills to help them become more self-sufficient in a workplace or at home. The Highland Rivers program supports women striving to overcome addictions and recover their lives.
