Police: Man punched, choked woman while kids watched

A Rome man accused of punching a woman in front of two children was in jail without bond Monday.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Justin Cody Overby, 24, of 1514 Flannery St., is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree and misdemeano­r battery.

He was arrested at his home Sunday night after reportedly punching the 23-year-old woman in the face and choking her in front of the children.

Visitor accused of stabbing car tires

A Tennessee man who reportedly said he just wanted to go home was in jail on assault charges Monday, pending a $11,200 bond.

According to Floyd County Jail and Rome Police Department reports:

Paul Lyle Cain, Jr., 54, of 2201 Eighth Ave. South, Apt. 203, in Nashville, was arrested at a home he was visiting on Dean Avenue and charged with the felonies aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

Witnesses told police Cain apparently took too much of his prescripti­on Xanax and cut a tire on his car when he was told he shouldn’t drive. Officers

left after a promise to calm down but were called back later after Cain tried to drive again, threatened a man with an open knife and stabbed another of his tires.
