Ga. Highlands men come from behind for win

Down by as many as 12 points, Georgia Highlands College’s men’s basketball team found a way to come back for a 77-70 conference win over Gordon State on Wednesday.

The visiting Highlanders went back and forth with the host Chargers in the GCAA contest before coming out in the second half and taking a 52-40 lead with 14:24 to go in the second half.

GHC got a spark coming off the bench with Sandro Noel, who had 10 points in only 11 minutes of play to give Georgia Highlands a 60-59 lead with 7:21 remaining.

With the game tied at 68 with 1:34 to go, the Chargers’ DeMarcus Addie hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring to give GHC a 71-68 lead, and GHC pulled away for the win.

“This was a great comeback,” said Chargers head coach Phil Gaffney. “Sandro Noel gave us a great blast off the bench with 10 points and great energy.”

The Chargers had five players in double digits led by Addie and Jeremiah Buford with 17 points each. TaJuan Johnson finished with 12, while Noel and D’Andre Benard each had 10. GHC was also perfect at the line, going 11-of-11.

The Chargers (18-7, 12-1 GCAA) return to action Saturday at home taking on East Georgia State at 4 p.m. following the women’s game at 2 p.m.

PREP SOCCER: Dade County girls 3, Pepperell 2

The Pepperell girls’ soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday as they came up short against Region 7-AA foe Dade County, 3-2.

Jasmine Martinez and Ansley Davenport each had a goal for the Lady Dragons (2-1-1, 2-1 7-AA). Pepperell keeper Breanna Culpepper had five saves. The Lady Dragons will host Coosa on Friday.
