Arsenal teams open season at tournament­s

The YMCA’s Arsenal Rome B13 team won the Gold Division championsh­ip of the Atlanta Super Cup tournament held in Marietta this past weekend.

Arsenal lost to CFA Dalton 05 Elite 1-0 to start the tournament last Saturday, with goalkeeper Will Payne recording seven saves. In the second game, Arsenal defeated UFA Forsyth 05B Gold 1-0. Steven Villatoro scored the lone goal with an assist from Joshua Hernandez. Payne had five saves.

Sunday had Arsenal earning second in pool play after picking up another 1-0 win, this time over Cherokee Impact U13 Elite. Tucker Wright scored with an assist from Villatoro, and Payne had three saves.

Facing CFA Dalton 05 Elite again, this time for the division championsh­ip, Arsenal bested Dalton 2-0 with Gavyn Williams and Villatoro scoring, and Isaiah Johnson getting an assist. Payne finished with six saves.

The Arsenal’s B11 team was also in the Atlanta Super Cup, making it to its division’s championsh­ip game before finishing second.

AFC Lightning 07B Red 1-0 in the afternoon with a goal from Giovani Echanique.

The team then beat Smyrna Soccer Club 2007 Boys White 3-2 in the semifinal on Sunday, with Echanique’s corner-kick “golden goal” in overtime. Arsenal had a rematch with UFA Forsyth in the championsh­ip

but fell 3-1. Echanique got the loan goal.

Arsenal’s G14 Red team competed in the Concorde Fire Challenge tournament this past weekend, winning two games and losing one.

The team opened with a 2-1 win over Henry County United Navy on Saturday, battling back from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Malone Christen scored both goals for Arsenal with an assist from Sarah Beth Dupree. Tatum Ballinger recorded five saves in goal.

Chiefs Blue 2-0 in the afternoon game. Christen notched two more goals with an assist from Emily Wyatt and Carlee Brock. Ballinger recorded the shutout in goal with six saves.

Arsenal fell to eventual tournament champion Atlanta Fire United Gold 3-1 in the Sunday morning contest.

Christen recorded the lone goal in the second half with an assist from Payton Brown. Ballinger notched 11 saves in goal.
