An evening of catching up with friends was also the background for recognizing the achievements of some of Rome and Floyd County’s most talented sports figures.

A crowd filled the Krannert Center Ballroom on the campus of Berry College on Monday to witness the induction of four new members to the RomeFloyd Sports Hall of Fame, presented by Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation.

Former West Rome standouts Eric Floyd and NaeNae Daniels Saxton, former Darlington athlete and current South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp, and legendary Model basketball player Jermaine Spivey were each honored during the program.

Floyd was part of the 1982 West Rome state championship football team before becoming a standout at Auburn and moving on to play six seasons in the NFL.

Daniels made an impression while on the West Rome girls’ basketball team and found a spot on the 1994 Alabama women’s team that went to the NCAA Final Four.

A basketball and football standout at Darlington, Muschamp has worked his way up through the college football coaching ranks and was the head coach at

Florida before taking the top job with the Gamecocks in 2016.

Spivey rose to prominence as a key member of the Model boys’ basketball team, scoring over 1,800 points before graduating in 1991. He then played for the University of New Orleans and 15 seasons as a professional in Europe.

Also, Pepperell’s Kaylee Mansell and Armuchee’s JC Burkett were announced as the recipients of the 2018 John Pinson Jr. Outstanding Student Athlete Award scholarships. The money for the scholarships is raised through the support of the Willard Nixon Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament.
