The Rome Noon Optimist Club is accepting applications for its oratorical contest on March 10 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Lakes Baptist Church, 2200 Redmond Circle. The competition is open to any student who had not reached their 18th birthday prior to last Oct. 1. There is no minimum age. The topic for the contest is “Where are My Roots of Optimism?” Participants will be judged on both content and delivery. The deadline for registering is Friday. and the Berry College Environmental Studies program in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Department of Religion & Philosophy will cosponsor a lecture titled “Duyuk’ dv’ I: The Correct Way in Cherokee” by Tom Belt on March 6 at 7 p.m. at Evans Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway, in honor of the 180th Anniversary of the Trail of Tears. Tom Belt is the Western Carolina University Cherokee Language Program Coordinator and is working to create a Cherokee language program at the university level. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Belt is a fluent Cherokee speaker and works closely with speakers from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to produce culturally-based Cherokee language learning material. The Berry Singers will have a pre-tour concert at 7:30 p.m. on March 6 at the Berry College Chapel, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway. Works originally conducted by Austrian composer Franz Herzog and American composer Mark Popeney and historic works by Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak will be performed along with folk songs by William L. Dawson and Mack Wilberg. Berry College Director of Choral Activities Paul Neal will conduct. The pre-tour concert is free and open to the public. Mount Berry Mall will
host Color for a Cause, a live mural-coloring contest, on March 15 from 5-7 p.m. During the event, participating organizations will be provided a mural and given two hours to color. Guest judges will select the most creative mural to win a prize donation, and the murals will be uploaded to wecolorforacause.com for the community to vote for their favorite to be displayed in the mall. Throughout the evening, shoppers will be able to participate by showing their receipt to earn a point for a participating organization. Color for a Cause will donate $1 for each point earned and the organization with the most points will receive an additional prize donation.
The 2018 Leprechauna-thon 5K race will be held
March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Runners and walkers should wear green for a chance to win prizes at the pre-race costume contest. To register and for more information visit rfpra.com/leprechaun-a-thon.
