Unity Christian’s Slaughter makes college choice official
During his career as a student-athlete at Unity Christian School, Janson Slaughter has had to learn to adapt to changes. The senior’s decision where to play in college, however, was all his.
After weighing his options with different schools, Slaughter made his choice official Thursday, signing to play for the Berry College Vikings once he graduates later this spring.
The ceremony was done during an assembly in Unity Christian’s gym in front of the entire school, with head football coach and athletic director Mark Ackerman as emcee.
Slaughter has been a key player for the Lions’ football team throughout his time at Unity, keeping
up with the change from 12-man to 8-man two years ago and then making the switch from quarterback to receiver.
“I could tell lots of stories
of one-handed catches this past season and his move from quarterback to wide receiver,” Ackerman said. “But it’s who he is as a Unity guy
that makes him special.”
Slaughter had 67 receptions for 1,105 yards in his final season at Unity, scoring 22 touchdowns and recording eight twopoint conversions as the Lions reached the GICAA state playoffs.
He was named all-region and all-state, and was also a first-team selection on the Rome News-Tribune All-Area team.
Slaughter also plays basketball and golf for Unity.
“When I think of a Unity School athlete, I think of Janson,” Unity boys’ basketball coach Matt Claytor said in a statement. “His hard work and dedication has been a huge part of building so many of the athletic programs we have here.”
Berry will be entering its sixth season in the fall after capturing the Southern Athletic Association championship last season and earning a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in program history.
