City of Rome certified municipal arborist Terry Paige and Floyd County Extension Agent Keith Mickler will host a free pruning demonstration today from noon to 2 p.m. at the Rome Civic Center, 400 Civic Center Drive. Learn timely techniques for pruning small trees and shrubs, the correct tools to use, principles of pruning and strategies. The free workshop will be held rain or shine. The 2018 Leprechaun-a-thon 5K race will be held March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Runners and walkers should wear green for a chance to win prizes at the pre-race costume contest. Home and the Berry College will co-sponsor a lecture titled “Duyuk’ dv’ I: The Correct Way in Cherokee” by Tom Belt on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Evans Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway, in honor of the 180th anniversary of the Trail of Tears. The speaker, Tom Belt, is the Western Carolina University Cherokee language program coordinator. Works originally conducted by Austrian composer Franz Herzog and American composer Mark Popeney and historic works by Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak will be performed along with folk songs. Floyd County CASA will hold a CASA 101 volunteer information session on Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Oostanaula Room at the RomeFloyd County Library, 205 Riverside Parkway. The session will include information about the application process, the training and the case support provided to each volunteer. Kiwanis Club of Rome will host its annual music showcase on March 10 from 1-4 p.m. at Ford Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway. Rome and Floyd County schools students in ninth through 12th grades and home-school students who reside in Rome or Floyd County are eligible to participate. Student performances may be vocal or instrumental. Judges will select the top three performers to receive Kiwanis education scholarships ranging from $200 to $1,000. Application deadline is
