The 2018 Leprechaun-a-thon 5K race will be held March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Runners and walkers should wear green for a chance to win prizes at the pre-race costume contest. To register and for more information visit rfpra.com/ leprechaun-a-thon. Preregistration is $25 for the 5K and $20 for the walk. Kids ages 12 and younger and groups of 10 or more can register for $20 each by visiting the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation administration office, 1 Shorter Ave. Pre-registration ends on March 16. Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home and the Berry College will co-sponsor a lecture titled “Duyuk’ dv’ I: The Correct Way in Cherokee” by Tom Belt on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Evans Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway, in honor of the 180th anniversary of the Trail of Tears. The speaker, Tom Belt, is the Western Carolina University Cherokee language program coordinator. The Berry Singers will have a pre-tour concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Berry College Chapel, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway. Works originally conducted by Austrian composer Franz Herzog and American composer Mark Popeney and historic works by Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvorak will
be performed along with folk songs. Berry College Director of Choral Activities Paul Neal will conduct. The event is free and open to the public.
Floyd County CASA will hold a CASA 101 volunteer information session on Tuesday from 5:306:30 p.m. in the Oostanaula Room at the Rome-Floyd County Library, 205 Riverside Parkway. The session will include information about the application process, the training and the case support provided to each volunteer. Kiwanis Club of Rome will host its annual music showcase on March 10 from 1-4 p.m. at Ford Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway. Rome and Floyd County schools students in ninth through 12th grades and home-school students who reside in Rome or Floyd County are eligible to participate. Student performances may be vocal or instrumental. Judges will select the top three performers to receive Kiwanis education scholarships ranging from $200 to $1,000. Application deadline is Tuesday. The Exchange Club of Rome will present Frank Shropshire and local youth competing for the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence Award at their meeting at noon on Friday. A Benefit Soccer Tournament for Jamie Strong will be held Friday at Grizzard Park. The cost is $20 per player. U10 and U12 registration will be from 5 to 5:30 p.m. and kickoff at 5:45 p.m. U14 and U16 regis-tration will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and kickoff at 7:15 p.m. Teams will be divided up as soon as registration closes. Each team should play at least two 25-minute games. All the proceeds will go to Jamie Hughes’ family to cover medical expenses. All participants will receive “Jamie Strong” T-shirts. Georgia Legal Services Program assistance will be available in the Judicial Courthouse, 3 Government Plaza, Suite 114 on Friday from 9 a.m.-noon to assist low-income clients in a range of civil matters includ-ing TPOs, public benefits, housing, consumer issues, school suspen-sions and unemployment.
