Lady Wolves battle

The Rome High girls’ soccer team pulls out a 4-3 win over East Paulding.

Rome High’s girls’ soccer team hosts East Paulding at Barron Stadium.

Freshman Janet Hartman scored a hat trick for the Rome High girls’ soccer team Tuesday night, the last goal of which came early in overtime to give the Lady Wolves a 4-3 comeback win over East Paulding.

The victory at Barron Stadium kept Rome undefeated against Region 7-5A teams this season and was a total team effort, according to head coach Jessica Hewitt.

Jennifer Zavala scored the first goal for the Lady Wolves, who were down 3-1 going into the final 10 minutes of full time. That’s when Hartman scored her first goal to make it 3-2. She evened the score with a minute left on a corner kick that bent into the goal.

Rome keeper Michele Monzalvo finished with six saves as the Lady Wolves improve to 3-5 overall and 3-0 in the region. They host Sonoravill­e on Friday.

Model boys 6, Adairsvill­e 4

The Model Blue Devils came back against non-region foe Adairsvill­e on the road Tuesday and scored four goals in the final 14 minutes to pull out a 6-4 victory.

Tee Jarrard put up a hat trick for Model, including the goal in the 66th minute that kicked off the late rally. He then worked with Jason Ortega to get the right spot before Ortega scored with only 30 seconds left and set the final tally.

Ortega finished with two goals, and Ryan Patterson had one. Alex Nelson, Matthew Syverson, Patterson and Nathan Weaver each had an assist. Keeper David Clark had seven saves.

Model (4-0) will host Region 7-AA foe Dade County on Thursday.

Model girls 5, Adairsvill­e 5

Despite a hat trick from Jennifer Espinoza and some top work in goal, the Model girls’ soccer team ended its non-region game against Adairsvill­e in a 5-5 tie Tuesday.

Aside from Espinoza’s three goals, Lauren Akemon, Neely Brownlow and Anna Ruth Parker each scored for the Lady Blue Devils. Melanie Morrison and Bethany Crawley split time in goal and had four saves each.

Model (3-0-1) will be back in action Thursday against Region 7-AA foe Dade County at home.

TENNIS: Model boys 5, Pepperell 0

Model’s boys’ tennis team swept Pepperell on Tuesday to remain undefeated this season.

The Blue Devils’ doubles teams started out rocky but recovered to still win in two sets. The No. 1 team of Justin Roberts and Micah Veillon won 7-5, 6-2, while the No. 2 team of Chase Geier and Cole Locklear won 7-5, 6-0.

In singles action, No. 1 Parker Stone won 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Kyle Hale won 6-1, 6-1, and Eli Abdou won 6-1, 6-0.

Model (4-0) will be back in action Thursday at Gordon Central.

Rockmart girls 5, Gordon Central 0

Rockmart’s girls’ tennis team got a 5-0 win over Gordon Central at home Tuesday to improve to 7-1.

Emma Evans picked up the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Mary Ella Owens won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Taylor McVey competed the sweep at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Doubles matches went to Alexis Clanton and Anna Smith at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, while Alexis Casey and Rose Haney wrapped up the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-3.

Rockmart takes on Coosa on Thursday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Rockmart boys 5, Gordon Central 0

Tuesday’s Region 7-AA match at Rockmart went to the home team as the Yellow Jackets swept Gordon Central 5-0.

Timothy Malone won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-4, Jackson Norris won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Bennest Vest won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hunter England and Elijah Malone won 6-1, 6-4, and the No. 2 team of Dylan Mahan and Gavin Tan won 6-2, 6-2.

Rockmart (5-2) is back in action Thursday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College to take on Coosa.

BASEBALL: Rome 5, Marietta 0

Rome High’s baseball team defeated Marietta 5-0 on the road Monday night in non-region play.

Chandler Bridges pitched five innings for the win, scattering four hits and striking out nine. Knox Kadum struck out three in the final two innings for the save.

The offense was led by Connor Bullard, who went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Sevie Andrews followed that up with a 2 for 2 performanc­e, including a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Rome (4-3) is back in action today at Ringgold.

TENNIS: Coosa boys, girls defeat Dade

Both the Coosa Eagles and Lady Eagles picked up wins on the tennis courts Monday with matching 3-2 wins over visiting Dade County.

For the boys, Joseph Smyth won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Jordan Broom won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Brady Jacobs and Bradley Johnson won 6-3, 6-2.

In the girls’ matches, Victoria Thomaston picked up the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1, while Coosa swept doubles play with Sadie Hagen and Alexis Holmes taking No. 1 doubles 6-0,61, and Brinley Smith and Keegan Justice winning No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-0.
