Edna Vivian Earle Whatley

Edna Vivian Earle Whatley, loving mother, grandmothe­r and greatgrand­mother, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018, after a short illness. Mrs. Whatley was a business education teacher in Floyd County for 29 years — Coosa High School (1962-1972) and Coosa Valley Technical School (1972-1991). A charter member of Garden Lakes Baptist Church, Mrs. Whatley currently was active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class and Women on Mission and previously served in the church choir and primary Sunday School. She also was an active member of Daughters of Berry, Alpha Delta Kappa, and AAUW, and had been a member of several profession­al teachers’ organizati­ons.

Born in Curryville (Floyd County), Ga. on September 19, 1925 to Laura Pearl Davis and Malcolm Landrum Earle, Edna Earle married Newton Anderson Whatley, of Plainville, in 1948. They were married for 59 years until his death in 2007. Their family of three children grew to number 16 at the time of her passing.

Mrs. Whatley is survived by her children, Lynn Earle and Vicki Whatley, of Rome; Laura Whatley Gunn, of Rome; and Rick and Vivian Whatley Marshall, of Apopka, Fla.; grandchild­ren, Stephen and Rosemary Whatley, Peter and Alyssa Whatley, Olivia Gunn, Adam and Sarah Gunn Van Pelt, Will Marshall and Leah Marshall; and, great-grandchild­ren, Jacob Gunn and Anderson Marshall. Her great-grands were the lights of her last years of life.

A life-long resident of Floyd County, Mrs. Whatley graduated from Model High School in 1941 and Berry College in 1945. Education was very important to her and she received a Master of Education in Business Education in 1968 from the University of Georgia and a Specialist in Education in 1976 from West Georgia College.

When she wasn’t busy with family, church and school, Edna and Newton loved to travel. They traveled first across the U.S. then around the world cruising and touring. Over the years, she visited the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, England, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, countries surroundin­g the Mediterran­ean, and the Panama Canal.

A celebratio­n of her life will be held at Garden Lakes Baptist Church on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception following in the church’s fellowship hall. A private interment will be at Salmon Cemetery later that day. Edna Vivian Earle Whatley

Mr. Charles Franklin Tucker, age 80, of Rome, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018, in a local hospital.

Mr. Tucker was born in Rome, Ga. on November 7, 1937, son of the late Oliver Frank Tucker and the late Gladys Compton Tucker. He was a graduate of Rome High School and served for a brief time in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Georgia Power for over 37 years. Mr. Tucker was a member of the Georgia Power Ambassador­s and Second Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Pat Ogles, to whom he was married on April 6, 1958; two daughters, Kay Tucker Doegg, and her husband, Keith, Rome, and Beth Tucker Hemmer, and her husband, Lance, Jacksonvil­le, Fla.; four grandchild­ren, Kyle Doegg, Birmingham, Ala., Kady Doegg, Athens, Ga., Daniel Hemmer and Matthew Hemmer, both of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Ann Mills, Silver Creek; nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel. Dr. Gary Graves will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Ms. Kathryn Corbin Gravitt, age 94, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, in a local health care facility.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Mike Ellis will officiate.

Habitat for Humanity Coosa Valley is accepting applicatio­ns for the “A Brush with Kindness” program. The program assists homeowners in Floyd County by painting and performing minor repairs on the exterior of their homes. The homeowner repays the cost of the materials and supplies through a no-interest loan. Applicatio­ns may be picked up at the ReStore, 95 Three Rivers Drive. There is a $10 fee for a background check. Homeowners will be required to make a 10-percent down payment on the estimated cost of the project.
