Model girls take 7-2 win over Coosa

Jennifer Espinoza completed a hat trick with two early goals in the second half Friday to lift Model’s girls’ soccer team to a 7-2 win over Region 7-AA foe Coosa in Shannon.

The Lady Blue Devils (4-1-1, 4-1 7-AA) led 3-0 at halftime and went up 6-0 after a straight goal and penalty kick from Espinoza was followed by a close-quarter goal from Alissa Clark.

Coosa (5-2, 3-1 7-AA) got on the board in the 72nd minute on a goal from Jasmine Limon, and the Lady Eagles capped off the game with a goal from Emily Martin on a penalty kick at the end of full time.

Lauren Akemon scored twice for Model, while Anna Ruth Parker added a goal as well. Melanie Morrison and Bethany Crawley split time in goal with Morrison recording five saves and Crawley getting six.

Coosa hosts Dade County on Tuesday, while Model visits Gordon Central on Thursday.

Armuchee boys 8, Chattooga 0

Malachi Campbell had a hat trick for Armuchee on Friday as the Indians’ boys’ soccer team shut out host Chattooga 8-0.

Davis Yeargan added two goals for the Indians (6-1-1), Christophe­r Castro had one goal and two assists, Blake Abney and Hunter Mathis each scored a goal, and Kody Manikas had an assist.

Armuchee will next face Gordon Central on the road Tuesday.

Armuchee girls 6, Chattooga 0

Brandy Ann Wacker scored three goals Friday to lift the Armuchee girls’ soccer team to a 6-0 shutout against host Chattooga.

Addie Grace Trejo, Shiloh St. Clair and Madison Broome each scored a goal for the Lady Indians (3-4). Goalkeeper Kassidy Kinsey had three saves.

The Lady Indians will next travel to face Gordon Central on Tuesday.

Rome girls 2, Sonoravill­e 2

The Rome High girls’ soccer team played to a 2-2 tie Friday against visiting Sonoravill­e in a non-region match, making the Lady Wolves’ record on the season 3-5-1.

Haley Guerrero and Allyson Harris each scored a goal for Rome, and Jennifer Zavala had an assist.

Michele Monzalvo had seven saves in goal. The Lady Wolves will next host Woodland on Tuesday.

Gordon Central girls 4, Pepperell 1

Pepperell’s girls’ soccer team was defeated 4-1 on Friday by Gordon Central.

Jasmin Martinez scored the Lady Dragons’ (2-5-1) only goal off an assist by Ansley Davenport. Pepperell will next host Rockmart on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL Unity Christian 9, Lanier Academy 1

Keri Glass pitched the Unity Christian softball team to a 9-1 win Friday against Lanier Christian Academy.

Glass struck out seven over six innings for the Lady Lions (1-0). At the plate, Raegan Moody was 2 for 3 with a double and a single, Glass hit a double, and Maddie Dorough and Maggie Dyer both went 1 for 2.

Unity Christian will host Holy Ground Baptist on Monday at Grizzard Park.

BASEBALL Coosa 2, Chattooga 1

Caleb Shiflett pitched a complete game and struck out 13 to lift the Coosa baseball team to a 2-1 win against visiting Chattooga on Friday.

Shiflett allowed three hits and no earned runs in the Region 7-AA contest. Logan Pledger was 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI for the Eagles (4-5, 1-1 7-AA), and Shiflett was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Eagles will next host Heard County today.

Dade County 9, Armuchee 5

The Armuchee baseball team fell to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AA play Friday with a 9-5 loss to Dade County.

Randon Carter took the loss on the mound for the Indians. At the plate, Brett Barker hit a double and Christian Hale hit a triple. Armuchee will next visit Chattooga on Tuesday.
