Gerrell Andrews Smith

Gerrell Andrews Smith died on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Shannon, Georgia, on November 19, 1929 to the late Fitzhugh and Maude Andrews. As a child she and her family moved to Rome. She was the youngest of nine children. Gerrell was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter, J.C., and James; and her sisters, Lillian Hall, Edna Patterson, and Grace Joyner.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of nearly 70 years, Paul E. Smith; her daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Tom Sills; her grandchild­ren, Paul and Chris; a brother, Calvin (Alice) Andrews, and a sister, Sybil Hill, also survive, along with nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of Second Avenue Baptist Church, having attended from the time she was a child when it was called Maple Street Baptist Church. She was employed for over thirty years at National City Bank, was a member of the American Cancer Society, and the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmothe­r, and daughter.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are being handled by Daniels Funeral Home. The service will be held at Second Avenue Baptist Church on Friday, April 6, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. Family visitation will be held at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Second Avenue Baptist Church.

Melanie Boggus-Griggs

Melanie Boggus-Griggs, age 56, of Rome, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Melanie was born December 6, 1961 in Canton, Ga., the daughter of the late James Donald Boggus Sr. and Sarah Julia Mosley Boggus. Melanie was employed by GMC Pharmacy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Griggs.

Survivors include her brother, James “Don” Boggus Jr.; sisters, Trina Boggus Boteler, Dee Anne Boggus and Tammy Boggus; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Good Shepherd Funeral Chapel with Dr. Billy Rabern officiatin­g. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour on Saturday.

Mrs. Jeanette Smith Adcock, age 84, of Lindale, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Adcock was born January 8, 1934 in Bartow County, a daughter of the late Carl Smith and Lula Camp Smith. She was a member of Snow Springs Baptist Church, and retired from Rome Manufactur­ing Company after 32 years of service. Mrs. Adcock was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Julian Adcock.

Survivors include her daughter, Teresa Adcock, and her husband, Tony Stansell, Lindale; son, Michael Adcock, Lindale; brother, Billy Smith, Adairsvill­e; sister, Evelyn (Chuck) Touchstone, Adairsvill­e; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018, at Snow Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Clinton Carver and Doug Mattox officiatin­g. Interment will follow in Snow Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the funeral hour on Friday at Snow Springs Baptist Church, 61 Snow Springs Church Road, Adairsvill­e, Ga. 30103.

Pallbearer­s include the following gentlemen, who are asked to meet at the church by 2:30 p.m. on Friday: Chuck Touchstone, Todd Stansell, Dylan Harmon, William Smith, Travis Smith, and Theron Goggins.

Barry A. Cannon, age 70, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at his residence.

A memorial service will be announced later by Good Shepherd Funeral Home.

Charles Watkins

Mr. Charles Watkins, age 67, of Armuchee, Georgia, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2018.

Services for Mr. Charles Watkins will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Temple Holiness Church, 1321 Martin Luther King Blvd., Rome, Georgia. He will repose from 12 noon until the hour of service. Interment will follow at the Bethel A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 22 Nichols Road, Rome, Georgia 30161.

The family will reside at the family residence, 4546 Old Summervill­e Road, Armuchee, Georgia, for repast.

Mr. Charles Asa Watkins was born to the late Mrs. Ruth (Earnest) Ines Pension Diamond and the late Asa Watkins Sr. Mr. Watkins was best known by his famous saying, “Shame, shame, shame.” On Saturday, March 31, 2018, after a short illness, Heaven’s gates opened and called him home.

Mr. Watkins leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Tenza Watkins; two sons, Charles Anthony, of Atlanta, and Joshua (Tonya), of Rome; two daughters, Britney, of Rome, and Tina, of Armuchee; two brothers, Asa Jr. (Carol), of California, and Darnell (Ulysis), of Aragon. He also leaves eighteen grandchild­ren and nine great-grandchild­ren, and two special uncles, Tommy (Emma Grace) Pension and Bennie (Retha) Pension. Mr. Watkins was self-employed as an outstandin­g constructi­on worker for thirty-plus years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching NASCAR racing in his spare time. He will be missed by all.
