Encarnacio­n’s run leads Rome to victory over Charleston

Jean Carlos Encarnacio­n scored the decisive run on a double play in the fifth inning, as the Rome Braves beat the Charleston RiverDogs 2-1 on Tuesday.

Encarnacio­n scored after he led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Garrison Schwartz.

In the top of the first, Charleston took the lead on a single by Dalton Blaser that scored Frederick Cuevas. The Braves tied the game in their half of the inning when Drew Waters hit into a double play to score Isranel Wilson.

Rome took the lead in the fifth when Carlos Martinez grounded into a double play, pushing the second run across the plate making it a 2-1 game. The Braves bullpen shined, going six shutout innings to help preserve the 2-1 final.

Freddy Tarnok (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while Charleston starter Garrett Whitlock (0-1) took the loss. Dilmer Mejia pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Jean Carlos Encarnacio­n Rome 2, Charleston 1

The Education Day game was played before a crowd of 1,796, most of which were school-aged children from nearby systems.

The win snapped a two-game skid for Rome, who improves to 4-2 on the season and will have a chance to win its second series of the season today when it hosts Charleston in the rubber match at 1 p.m. at State Mutual Stadium.
