Hawks overcome early deficit in win over Emmanuel

The Shorter baseball team came from behind Tuesday afternoon to top Emmanuel 16-7 to complete the season sweep.

With the win, Shorter’s record improved to 2121 on the season, while the Lions moved to 16-22 overall.

Emmanuel jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, only to have the Hawks come back with a run in the second on a solo home run from Isaiah Maddela. A run in the fourth as Samyr Santos came in on an error brought the score to 4-2..

The Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2, but the Hawks cut the lead back to two runs in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Raul Cortes. Emmanuel then countered with two in the sixth to make it a 7-3 score.

It was all Shorter after that. The Hawks tacked on 13 unanswered runs for the 16-7 final score. Luis Acevedo hit a tworun homer in the seventh to make the score 7-5.

Ethan Radcliffe then brought in Ivan Nunez on a single and Victor Perez brought in Cortes for an 8-7 score. .

Shorter added eight runs in the ninth inning to put the game away. Radcliffe led off the scoring coming in on an error. Santos scored when Angel Acosta reached based on catcher’s interferen­ce and Maddela came in on a walk to Acevedo. Matt Christian and Nunez then hit back-to-back home runs. Christian’s grand slam gave the a Hawks 15-7 lead.

Victor Santana earned the win, keeping the Lions scoreless and without a hit, while allowing a walk and striking out two through two innings of relief.

Trey Urban started, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Cates pitched the final inning, retiring each of the three batters he faced with a strikeout.

The Hawks finished with 13 hits. Radcliffe and Santos each finished with three hits apiece.

Shorter next travels to Valdosta for the final road GSC series of the season with postseason hopes on the line. Saturday’s doublehead­er is set for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. from Billy Grant Field and Blazer Park.
