Chieftains Museum hosts Junior Service League’s ‘Legacy’ exhibit through May

Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home is now hosting “A Legacy of Service: The Junior Service League of Rome,” an exhibit on the history of the organization in Rome and Floyd County.

The exhibit includes seven text panels and chronicles the history and achievements of the Junior Service League from its beginning in 1934 through the present-day.

Themes explored in the exhibition include the organization’s efforts to provide assistance for our community for everything from education to arts, health and human services, to social issues. In many cases, the Junior Service League brought programs and initiatives to Rome and Floyd County that weren’t available before, including funding the salaries for the first speech teachers in our school systems, providing the first vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings for local children, and raising funds to build playgrounds and lunchrooms for local schools.

The Junior Service League has also protected the community’s early history over the years by acquiring and opening Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home in 1971, and getting the house named as a National Historic Landmark, the only one in Rome and Floyd County. The organization still owns and is active in the museum today.

The exhibition will be on display through May 31. Admission to the exhibit is included with regular museum admission.
