Wreck involving train claims life of Gordon Co.teen

CALHOUN — As classmates mourn the loss of 17-yearold Jazzmyne Ashworth, Sonoravill­e High School announced this week that they will have counselors on site Wednesday from 4 6 p.m. to offer support to students who are trying to deal with the rising senior’s death.

According to the preliminar­y report from the Tennessee State Patrol:

On June 21, a 2009 Ford Fusion driven by a Chattanoog­a woman turned into the path of a Norfolk Southern Railroad train.

Ashworth, her father Johnny Ashworth and Wendy Humphreys were killed.

Jazzmyne Ashworth was announced as a winner in the “2018 Disney Dreamers Academy Essay Contest” in May, where she was able to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy.

She was also among 200 students chosen nationwide to attend the prestigiou­s three-day 24th Annual Global Youth Institute late last year.

Funeral arrangemen­ts for Jazzmyne Ashworth are being provided by Ponders Funeral Home Calhoun. Jazzmyne’s family will receive friends on Saturday, June 30, between 3 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. from Ponders Funeral Home Calhoun Chapel. on July 1.

The Great Race is an endurance race with classic cars and all participan­ts drive vintage vehicles. Each vehicle must be model year 1972 or older. Team DeSoto is driving a 1955 DeSoto Fireflite that was restored by GNTC’s Automotive Technology program.

Four GNTC Automotive Technology students are participat­ing in The Great Race. Two students, Adam Grogan and Nicholas Barber, are alternatin­g as drivers and two students, Zayne Waits and John Valle, are alternatin­g as navigators. All four students are residents of Cedartown. TODAY

The City of Cave Spring will have an Independen­ce Day fireworks display at 9 p.m. on Saturday in downtown Cave Spring.

Restoratio­n Lindale will host the Lindale Independen­ce Day Festival on Saturday. Line up for the festival parade will be at 9:30 a.m. at Pepperell Primary School. The Rome-Floyd NAACP will hold their annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Rome First United Methodist Church Garnett M. Wilder Center, 202 E. Third Ave. Georgia NAACP President Phyllis Blake will be the guest speaker. Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum will present “Sanctuary at Berry: Wildlife Photograph­y by Gena Flanigen” through Aug. 18. This exhibition explores Berry College’s wild inhabitant­s, including a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. Berry faculty and community members will present lectures on white-tailed deer, the Berry College bald eagles, striped bass spawning and more. Habitat for Humanity Coosa Valley is accepting applicatio­ns for the “A Brush with Kindness” program. The program assists homeowners in Floyd County by painting and performing minor repairs on the exterior of their homes. Applicatio­ns may be picked up at the ReStore, 95 Three Rivers Drive. There is a $10 fee for a background check. Homeowners will be required to make a 10 percent down payment on the estimated cost of the project.
