Annie Harris Burton, age 88, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at a local hospital after an extended battle with cancer.

Mrs. Burton was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 9, 1930, daughter of the late Margret Carnes Harris and the late William J. Harris. She was married to Robert Griffin Burton Jr., who also predecease­d her. Mrs. Burton was a member of Second Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Julia Kijowski (Paul), Rome; a son, Richard Burton (Jill), Rome; three grandsons, Adam Kijowski, Rome, Patrick McShane (Elizabeth), Jefferson, and Harris Burton, Savannah; and one great granddaugh­ter, Kate McShane.

A private interment will be held.

Donald Burle Nixon, age 60, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Nixon was born in Summervill­e, Georgia on December 8, 1957, son of Gordon Burle Nixon and the late Ruby Nell Gentry Salyers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Ray Nixon. Mr. Nixon worked for a number of years as a truck driver and was a member of the Desoto Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Keith Nixon, to whom he was married on May 9, 2009; children, Misty Dawn Nixon, Rome, Donald Burle Nixon Jr. (Teri Beth) Adairsvill­e, Wesley Adam Keith, MacKenzie Reneé Keith, Noah Jacob Nixon, and John Dallas Ivey, all of Rome; grandchild­ren, Destiny, Dakota, and Jasmine Pilcher, Dallas Lee Ivey and Karli Grace Nixon; his father, Gordon Burle Nixon, Rome; two brothers, Gordon Daniel Nixon, Rome, and Bobby Brock, Rome; two sisters, Sandra Nell Kelly (Franklin Eugene), Rome, and Mandi Castrejon, Coosa; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Lambert officiatin­g. Following the service, Mr. Nixon will be cremated according to his wishes.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the service time.

The annual Rome Shrine Club Telethon will be held starting at 6 p.m. today and Sunday. The event will be televised on Comcast channel 4 throughout the weekend and will feature Southern Gospel singing groups along with an auction from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. All net funds raised will go to pay children’s medical expenses and research expenses at Shriners Hospitals.

Living & Giving and Pop Up, Pop In, Broad St., will host a farmers market today from 8 a.m.-noon. All vendors will be local and there will be fresh bread and cheese for sale in addition to other items.

Downtown Rome Saturdays will be this today with a free concert on Broad Street featuring Electric Avenue, an ’80s pop tribute band. The concert will be held from 7-10 p.m. on Fourth Avenue. Access to Broad Street will be blocked off to vehicle traffic in the 300 and 400 blocks from 4-11 p.m. Outside coolers and drinks will not be permitted in the event area. Armbands will be available for purchase of alcoholic beverages. Free parking will be available at the Third, Fourth and Sixth Avenue decks. The concert will be held rain or shine. The Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower 5K Road Race and 2-Mile Health Walk will be held Aug. 18 at 8 a.m. starting at Heritage Park. Registrati­on for the 5K is $30 and the health walk is $25.
