Lidl puts up ‘coming soon’ signs in Cobb

- Jon Gargis,

MABLETON — Almost a year after reports that it was scaling back its plans to expand its footprint in Georgia, European grocery chain Lidl has its signature architecture and “coming soon” signs up in two Cobb locations.

But a spokesman for the chain remained mum Wednesday on an opening date or estimated timeframe to begin operating two of its first stores in the Peach State.

The grocery store chain at one point announced it had plans to build on Shorter Avenue in Rome.

Motorists on Floyd Road in Mableton and drivers on Powder Springs Road approaching its intersection with Barrett Parkway and the East-West Connector can now see construction on buildings featuring rows of glass windows. The structures resemble a sample store photo previously released by the company.

“It’s too early to offer timelines for each individual site, but I can tell you that we are preparing our first sites in Cobb County,” Lidl spokesman Will Harwood said. “We have received positive feedback from our customers in Georgia and look forward to introducing Lidl’s award-winning products and low prices to more communities in the state.”

Lidl’s website lists only one location operating in Georgia — a store in Augusta not far from another location across the state line in North Augusta, South Carolina.
