Three Rivers Singers present concert Oct. 14

-

The Three Rivers Singers will kick off their concert season with “Three Great American Composers: Copland, Gershwin and Bernstein” on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College/Heritage Hall, 415 E. Third Ave.

The concert is free and open to the public. They join “Leonard Bernstein at 100,” a twoyear global celebration of the life and career of the 20th century cultural giant with more than 2,000 events on six continents, kicked off at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts last September.

It is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, the composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador, and humanitarian, officially beginning on Bernstein’s 99th birthday, and continuing through his 100th year until Aug. 25, 2019.

They will sing a choral suite of “West Side Story,” which local audiences will recognize — “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Cool,” “America” and “Somewhere,” arranged by Mac Huff.

The singers will also perform a group of songs from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs – “Zions Walls,” “Simple Gifts,” “I Bought Me a Cat” and “Ching-A-Ring-Chaw” as well as a medley called “Rhapsody in Rhythm” by George and Ira Gershwin and arranged by Mark A. Brymer.

Music Director Len Willingham will lead the group and pianist Joan Hill will accompany.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated and are taxdeductible.
