The G.E. Retirees Fellowship Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Landmark Restaurant, 2740 Martha Berry Highway, for a memorial program honoring the 2018 deceased retirees. Club members and their spouses are invited.
FRIDAY
The Charles Parker Senior Center, 1325 Kingston Highway, will host a dance on Friday. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., a dance lesson will be given from 7-7:30 p.m. and the dance will be from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Attire is casual. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share. The Rome-Floyd Recycling Center, 412 Lavender Drive, will host a residential household hazardous waste and electronics recycling event on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call 706-291-5266 to make the required appointment before 5 p.m. on Friday. Hazardous waste collected is anything liquid you would not want to drink including paint, oil, herbicides, pesticides and unknowns. Electronics such as computers and periphery, televisions, cameras, recorders, etc., will be collected. The schedule is limited to the first 360 callers.
Events in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. this month will include a birthday extravaganza with DJ D-Low on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Rome City Auditorium, 601 Broad St.; family prayer breakfast with author Lisa J. Crawford, Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Lovejoy Baptist Church, 436 Branham Ave.; ecumenical service with the Rev. Gerald R. Durley, Atlanta, at the North Rome Church of God, 1929 N. Broad St., on Sunday at 5 p.m.; and a march featuring the MLK Community Choir and Mayor of Sparta, William Evans Jr. on Monday at 11 a.m. starting at the corner of First Avenue and Broad Street.

Western Promenaders Square Dance Club, 327 Woods Road, will host an Open House Extravaganza at the Barn with free, introductory, Western-style square dance lessons on Jan. 19 and Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. each evening. The 2019 Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-thon will be held March 16 in downtown Rome. A costume contest will be held at 6:30 p.m., the 5K race will begin at 7:30 p.m. and a walk will start after 7:40 p.m. Registration is open now at rfpra. com/leprechaun-a-thon and costs $25 for the 5K and $20 for the walk. Children ages 12 and younger and groups of 10 or more athletes can register for $20 by visiting the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation office, 1 Shorter Ave. Packet pickup at the Parks and Recreation office will be March 14 from 1-5 p.m. for groups and 5-8 p.m. for others, March 15 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and March 16 at Bridgepoint Plaza at 6 p.m. To be guaranteed a race t-shirt register online by March 3.
Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home, 501 Riverside Parkway, will present “Of Influence: Portraits of Cherokee People,” a traveling exhibition on loan from the Oklahoma History Center and funded by a grant from the Rome Area Council for the Arts, through Feb. 28. Ranging from 1845 to the 1960s, this portrait collection presents people of influence in the Cherokee tribe. The Moon Gallery, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway, will present Meditation in Space Time: Art Textiles by Junco Sato Pollack through Jan. 31. The exhibit showcases textiles from an ongoing series started in 2006 and informed by Pollack’s studies of Eastern spiritual philosophies, Christianity and New England Transcendentalism. Pollack is a native of Japan and associate professor emerita at Georgia State University, Atlanta. The gallery is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The artist will speak on Jan. 27 at 5 p.m.
The Salvation Army Social Service Center, 317 E. First Ave., is collecting diaper donations. Wipes and all sizes pull-ups and diapers are needed. Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum, 24 Veterans Memorial Highway, will host From Tree to Treasure: Woodturnings by Al Christopher, an exhibition of more than 50 unique woodturnings by Berry College alumnus Al Christopher, through May 25. Take Care of Rome hosts a free health fair for the homeless and underserved from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month at the Community Kitchen, 4 Calhoun Ave. The fair includes health education, testing for HIV and hepatitis C, total cholesterol and HgB-A1c screenings, blood pressure, vision screenings and full vitals. The Salvation Army is currently seeking donations. Needed items include tomato products; canned fruit; meats including tuna, Spam and ham; all types rice; dried beans; pastas; deodorants; toothpaste and toothbrushes; and soap. Donations provide food and hygiene products for 50 local families monthly. Donations may be dropped off at The Salvation Army Social Service Center, 317 E. First Ave.
Habitat for Humanity Coosa Valley is accepting applications for its “A Brush with Kindness” program. The program assists homeowners in Floyd County by painting and performing minor repairs on the exterior of their homes. Applications may be picked up at the ReStore, 95 Three Rivers Drive. There is a $10 fee for a background check. Homeowners will be required to make a 10-percent down payment on the estimated cost of the project.
Floyd County Superior Court Clerk Barbara H. Penson requests that veterans of all military branches of service be sure their DD-214 discharge is recorded at the courthouse. Veterans may record their DD-214 in Floyd County in addition to their hometown, county or state. Bring a DD-214 to the Clerk of Superior Court’s Office, 3 Government Plaza, Suite 101, to have it recorded in Floyd County. This is a free service for all veterans.

The Junior Service Leagues Follies return to the stage at the City Auditorium on Feb. 1-2. This year’s show is “Box Office Revue” and will feature a mixture of songs from well-known musicals. The Floyd County Republican Party will hold its Mass Precinct meeting Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Charles Parker Senior Center, 1325 Kingston Highway. New Echota State Historic Site, 1211 GA-225, Calhoun, and Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site, 813 Indian Mound Road, Cartersville, will have free admission Feb. 10 as part of Georgia State Parks’ Super Museum Saturday. New Echota was the Cherokee capital from 1825-1838, when the Cherokee were uprooted during the Trail of Tears. The Etowah Indian Mounds were home to several thousand Native Americans more than 400 years ago.
